retelling of The Jungle Book, part of the bestselling Classic
Starts® series that has sold more than 8 million copies!Â
Mowgli has lived among his wolf brothers for as long as he can
remember. Baloo and Bagheera teach him the ways of the jungle, but
some animals view him as a threat—or, even worse, as prey. Can
Mowgli find a place where he truly belongs?  This
abridged retelling is the perfect way to introduce young readers to
Mowgli’s life among elephants, giant snakes, and monkeys. The
book also includes discussion questions.Â
The Jungle Book is a collection of Rudyard Kipling's animal
stories, wonderfully told and interweaving moral lessons with
classic tales. They include the stories of Mowgli, a boy raised by
wolves in the Indian jungle, Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, a brave mongoose,
and Toomai of the Elephants, the story of a young elephant handler.
Gloriously illustrated with the original line artwork by J.
Lockwood Kipling C.I.E and W. H. Drake and with a foreword by Ben
Fogle and a ribbon marker, this beautiful hardback edition of
Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book, which was first published by
Macmillan in 1894, is a truly special gift to treasure.
The Jungle Book introduces Mowgli, the human foundling adopted by a
family of wolves. It tells of the enmity between him and the tiger
Shere Khan, who killed Mowgli's parents, and of the friendship
between the man-cub and Bagheera, the black panther, and Baloo, the
sleepy brown bear, who instructs Mowgli in the Laws of the Jungle.
A short story originally published as part of The Jungle Book. When
a family moves to India and rescues a half-drowned mongoose called
Rikki-tikki-tavi, they grow very fond of the cheeky fellow and soon
he runs in and out of the house as much as he pleases. The happy
mongoose eats at the table with the mother and father, and sleeps
in the nursery with their little boy, Teddy. But the family do not
realise that evil lives in the bushes by their home – a pair of
king cobras, who are plotting to kill the whole family so they can
rule the garden! Only Rikki-tikki-tavi can save the family from
certain death, but is he brave and strong enough to fight both of
them alone? Rikki-tikki-tavi was originally published as part of
The Jungle Book in 1894. In this edition, Kipling's story is
complete and unabridged. With atmospheric illustrations from the
award-winning artist, Robert Ingpen. 'Ingpen's drawings are utterly
compelling' – Michael Morpurgo

Three tales from Kipling's "Jungle Books". "Mowgli's Brothers"
tells the story of Mowgli, the young boy raised by wolves and under
the protection of Baloo the bear and Bagheera the black panther, as
they face the threat of the tiger, Shere Khan. In "The King's
Ankus", Mowgli is led to a vast treasure in a hidden city by the
python, Kaa. He does not realise, however that the allure of the
treasure leads men to kill... In "Red Dog", Mowgli and his wolfpack
are under threat from a vicious pack of wild dogs, and Mowgli must
turn to Kaa for help to defeat them. Classics Illustrated tells
these wonderful tales in colourful comic strip form, offering an
excellent introduction for younger readers. This edition also
includes a biography of Rudyard Kipling, theme discussions, a poem
by Kipling and study questions, which can be used both in the
classroom and at home to further engage the reader in the story.
HarperCollins is proud to present its new range of best-loved,
essential classics. 'There is no harm in a man's cub.' Best known
for the 'Mowgli' stories, Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book
expertly interweaves myth, morals, adventure and powerful
story-telling. Set in Central India, Mowgli is raised by a pack of
wolves. Along the way he encounters memorable characters such as
the foreboding tiger Shere Kahn, Bagheera the panther and Baloo the
bear. Including other stories such as that of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, a
heroic mongoose and Toomai, a young elephant handler, Kipling's
fables remain as popular today as they ever were.

HarperCollins is proud to present its range of best-loved,
essential classics. 'The man's cub is mine, Lungri - mine to me! He

Unlike his contemporaries Virginia Woolf and Henry James, Kipling
always denied he was a critic. But his letters, speeches, and
stories are full of comments on writing and writers. This
collection, including many formerly unpublished private letters and
papers, details Kipling's response to the commercialisation of
literature and the emerging role of the writer as celebrity in the
turbulent literary world of the 1890s and beyond. They reveal a
mind intensely concerned with questions of literary value, with
language and imagination, with truth, realism, and romanticism.
Kipling's fame made him a significant spokesperson for important
segments of the reading public - the soldiers, engineers, and
functionaries central to Britain's imperial expansion. He
profoundly influenced English literary language and our perception
of English national character. This book offers access to the
private and public history of a writer whose continuing influence
is still a matter of fierce controversy.
Introduction and Notes by R.T. Jones, Honorary Fellow of the
University of York. This edition of the poetry of Rudyard Kipling
(1865-1936) includes all the poems contained in the Definitive
Edition of 1940. In his lifetime, Kipling was widely regarded as
the unofficial Poet Laureate, and he was awarded the Nobel Prize
for Literature in 1907. His poetry is striking for its many rhythms
and popular forms of speech, and Kipling was equally at home with
dramatic monologues and extended ballads. He is often thought of as
glorifying war, militarism, and the British Empire, but an
attentive reading of the poems does not confirm that view. This
edition reprints George Orwell's hard-hitting account of Kipling's
poems, first published in 1942, and generally regarded as one of
the most important contributions to critical discussion of Kipling.
For fans of all ages, legendary British writer Rudyard Kipling's
complete collection of enchanting fables set in India-the basis of
the beloved animated Disney film and a modern cinematic retelling
from director Jon Favreau-now available in a deluxe four-color
illustrated collectible edition. The Jungle Book features stunning
artwork and nine 3-D interactive elements crafted by MinaLima
Design, the award-winning design studio behind the graphics for the
Harry Potter film franchise and the illustrated classic Peter Pan.
Since its publication in 1894, Rudyard Kipling's beloved
masterpiece The Jungle Book has been celebrated by generations of
readers. Composed of seven tales, each one accompanied by a poem,
The Jungle Book is a coming of age fantasy that introduces a lush,
colorful world full of adventure and danger. The first three tales
include some of the most charming and unforgettable characters in
literature-the man-cub Mowgli, the black panther Bagheera, the wise
brown bear Baloo, the ruthless tiger Shere Khan, and the hypnotic
python Kaa. The other four tales each tell the story of a different
animal, such as the travels of the white seal Kotick; the battle
between the courageous mongoose Rikki-Tikki-Tavi and the deadly
cobra Nag; Toomai and the elephant dance; and the camp animals of
the queen's guard. The second volume in Harper Design's newest
series of deluxe reimagined children's classics, this beautiful
unabridged edition takes readers deep into the heart of the Indian
jungle with specially commissioned four-color illustrations and
nine exclusive interactive features that will delight readers,
including a map of the lost Indian city where Mowgli is taken by
the monkeys; a trifold detailing the Laws of the Jungle; a spinning
dial of the elephant dance; and a map of Kotick's route to find a
new home. Beautifully designed, this keepsake illustrated edition
will be treasured by readers of all ages.
These twelve magical tales tell, among other things, how the camel
got his hump; the leopard his spots; the elephant his trunk; how
the alphabet was made; and how a butterfly caused mayhem at the
court of King Solomon. Rightfully considered one of the enduring
classics of children's literature, Just So Stories is an enchanting
collection that still delights and illuminates over a century after
it was first published. Beautifully illustrated throughout by
Kipling himself, this Macmillan Collector's Library edition also
contains an afterword by editor Marcus Clapham. Designed to appeal
to the booklover, the Macmillan Collector's Library is a series of
beautiful gift editions of much loved classic titles. Macmillan

These witty stories were originally told by Rudyard Kipling to his
own children. In them he gives fanciful accounts of how and why
things came to be as they are. Generations of children have
delighted to learn how the Leopard got his spots, how the
Elephant's Child on the banks of the great grey-green Limpopo
acquired his trunk with the help of the Crocodile, and the
beginning of the Armadillos. Beautifully illustrated in
black-and-white by the author, these delightful tales will hold the
reader and listener spellbound.
A beautifully illustrated collection of Rudyard Kipling's timeless
animal tales. How did the rhinoceros get his wrinkly skin? Why
won't cats come when they're called? How did one curious elephant
with a nose for trouble change the lives of all elephants
everywhere? These eight well-loved stories give inspired answers to
these and other intriguing questions. Each story is illustrated by
a major contemporary picture-book artist.
